Victorian hand carved Irish bog oak brooch featuring a castle in bas relief encircled by a garland of leaves.
It has the old 'C' hook clasp and tube pin assembly in silver tone metal, which dates this lovely antique brooch to around 1890.
The tube has a bit of movement when the pin is open, but has no movement upon closing tightly.
The brooch is of a large size, measuring 6cm / 2.36 inches by 4.4cm / 1.73 inches.
Bog oak is a tree that has been preserved in peat for thousands of years, bog woods throughout the world are very rare. During the 19th century bog oak was popular for making decorative jewellery, and in Dublin a trade in bog oak souvenirs was active at that time.
